Growing Pains

It is very hard for me to believe that my son is going to be one in less than a week. He is certainly doing his best to convince me… just last week he started calling everything “Banana” and then last night he took off and walked across the room to me.

His baby talk is less like baby talk and more like… well, actual words. He says things that sound like “What’s that?” and when he drops things he smiles and says “uh OH” (emphasis on the “OH”). He nurses maybe once a day and he doesn’t really miss it.

For the love of God, he drinks JUICE … FROM A SIPPY CUP!!!

Remind me again what happened to the baby I brought home from the hospital??

I know, I know. They grow up. And don’t get me wrong, I am loving his endearing little boy-ness that is developing. I just feel like I’m about ten steps behind him. I am feeding him baby food and the world is calling him a toddler. I still want to breast feed and he is happier with a bottle of rice milk.

Is this how it’s gonna be forever? Am I always going to find myself struggling to catch up? Struggling to embrace the fact that my little boy is changing… every. single. day. He is growing. He is getting stronger and smarter and God help me, climby-er. He actually can climb up on a box of cds in our living room and grab the top cushion of the couch and just bounce there. Yesterday he tried to climb his book case.

I am starting to understand the need for a prescription of Xanax. There are a million and three things that can harm him and those are the EXACT things he wants to play with. Live electrical wire? Awesome. Let’s gnaw on it. Mug of hot coffee? Sounds like something fun to dump on little feet and hands. Boiling water? Bath time! Rabid lion covered in sharp sticks? Let’s wrestle!

The boy is going to cause me to turn gray, white, and then lose all of my hair.

And he’s still only BARELY walking.

Can you buy stock in wine? And if so, do they pay dividends in, well… wine?

    rabid lion? let's wrestle!

Oh yes, I feel that pain. My whole weekend was spent rerouting him to new, slightly less dangerous objects. He also fell down three times. Because he thinks he can run now but his body moves faster than his feet. I am not a fan of that. I look forward to being able to watch a movie with him….because I need to sit down. He may be the one who falls down but I am the one covered in bruises from running into things while I try to catch him.

Seriously, why are my comments to you always so long? I think it's because I read this before I have my 9 am wine dividends.
