Sunday Sip and Speak

I’m not a good participator in all these awesome memes that run around the internet but I figured I’d start one, anyway. Because on Sunday mornings, I like to read. I like to have a cup of coffee (or three) and read something interesting. No matter the topic.

So welcome… to the first (and potentially only) Sunday Sip and Speak. Join up if you want and share your thoughts. I was going through some old journals and came across one of (many) journals full of poetry I wrote. I don’t write a lot of poetry anymore, which I think is a sign of me being… well, happy! But as part of this fun new Sip and Speak, I present… Law Momma the angst-filled poet.

The Shoes

I put away my shoes today…
the tiny, patent leather ones
with the shiny strap.

They haven’t fit since the early 80s when I would tap my way across
the hardwood floors of my memory-cleaned living room.

Still,
I kept them out.
Shined them daily.
Watching the wrinkled leather distort my reflection.

“You’ll dance again,” I’d tell myself,
“you’ll wear them one more time.”

No matter that reality (that wretched, wretched thing)
measured my feet five times too large.

In my mind, I could wear those shoes
Just as I could wear my hair in pigtails
(and twirl the ends to my lips).

Then…
today.
Today I put them away.

Polishing the leather one last time
with the teardrops you sent me,
packed in the box
alongside your careless words.

It was time,
I suppose,
To put away my youthful dreams.

Time to realize I am far too old
to dream of dancing.
