A “Poem” for your Sunday

Posted on | April 10, 2011 | 10 Comments

“Where did we go?” I say,
“I saw us in October;
there are pictures to show we were there,
both of us,
loving each other.
Then where did we go?”

“To Hawaii,” you say.
A shrug of your shoulders,
a roll of your words, or your eyes I can’t see.
“To Hawaii and then back here… home”

I point:
“No them, those us that we were…
“We were them, once, weren’t we?”

“They’re us,” you say, with a dismissal wave,
“That’s you and me”
And you give me that look I know,
that look that means
whatever game I’m playing is into extra innings
and you’ve lost interest.

“They’re us,” I repeat,
a brisk nod,
a quick smile,
a brush away tear.
I reach to take your hand
but find that you’ve moved on again,
back into the world where Mister lives,
quite separate from Misses.

“They’re us,” I repeat, and then,
look again.
“But where did we go?”

I am so sorry. Thinking of you, envisioning you surrounded by light. Hang in there.

I should probably share that this poem was written in May of 2008. Not recently.
