Yellow Sheets, Take Two

Posted on | December 2, 2011 | 10 Comments

When my husband first moved out, I found a set of bright yellow sheets in the back of a closet that had never been used.  I placed them on the bed and reminisced about what I thought when I bought those sheets and how so much had changed since then.  I wept for the loss of my marriage and the loss of my husband and wondered if I would ever find the kind of happiness, ever again, that warrants bright yellow sheets.

Yesterday, I came home from work and put those same yellow sheets on a brand new bed.  And right around 8pm, a little boy bounded into my room with a smile on both his face and his heart.  He took one look at the bed, climbed in and grinned.

“These are YELLOW sheets!” he cried out with joy, pulling them up over his head and burrowing down under their softness.  “Momma, you lay down too?”

I smiled and laid down next to my son, watching him touch the pillows one at a time, and then showing me the sheets, each time saying “That’s yellow right there, Mommy! That’s more yellow!”

We created a little yellow tent in the soft yellow bed with triangled yellow pillows and a spare bear or two and we turned on his flashlight to glow bright yellow in circles and spirals around us while we read a good night book.  And it was all giggles and warmth and love… and then it hit me.  Then I realized something pretty amazing:

This was who I bought these yellow sheets for… before I even knew he would be the one to appreciate them best.

OK, will wait patiently. But can we at least some details on the thread count? And in the meantime enjoy the sheets. Oh, wait, that sounded wrong, and sorta porny. Sorry!! Enjoy the sheets in a totally sunshiny fun totally platonic sort of way!!!

Thank you so much for filling me with hope that I can come around full circle some day too. Good for you! I am plummeting down one of the maddening hills of the divorce roller coaster right now 🙁

It feels so trite to say “Hang in there” because what other choice do you have? But it does get better… even when it doesn’t feel like it ever will.

Sunshine is my favorite color and it ALWAYS makes me smile–if I’m feeling down, I look for something yellow to remind that things will get better, there is good and happiness out there for me, and I just need to keep moving forward. I’m so glad your little one loves the sheets….I love that toddlers are so wise sometimes.
