I’ve seen a lot of posts about how Black Americans are “tired.” And I get it. I feel tired so I can’t imagine how tired they are. But here’s something I haven’t seen said, but that I have picked up on in my conversations with acquaintances and co-workers….

White People Are Scared.

Sure, you think, they’re scared of the protests. And maybe they are, but that’s not what I mean.

White people are scared that all those “just a joke”s  and “locker room talk”s and “group text messages with friends” are suddenly going to come back and be read aloud to a room of people who don’t look like them or think like them or pray like them. They’re scared they might lose their jobs or their spouses or their political support.

They’re down. right. scared.

This morning, J was asking me about getting a cell phone, something I don’t want him to have just yet. We talked about the responsibility that comes with having access to quick, one-liner conversations. I told him the most important rule to remember is to never put anything in a text or email that you wouldn’t want to read out loud to your mother and a room full strangers. It’s a good rule. But it’s one a lot of people don’t follow.

And because of that, a lot of White people are scared.

If you are scared about your text messages or your email jokes or your locker room banter? It’s because deep down YOU KNEW IT WAS WRONG WHEN YOU SAID IT. You just didn’t want anyone to find out about it. You didn’t think anyone would ever call you out because you assume all your friends felt the same. You felt secure in your use of the N word or your conversations about the opposite sex because you see yourself at the top of the food chain.

But the food chain is falling down, gals and gents.

And what if just one of your friends has a change of heart? What if just one of your buddies posts your text message rants or emailed jokes to Twitter? Or Facebook?

Have you said things you’re ashamed of? Have you had conversations you don’t want the entire world to read?

Better get out your cell phones.

Better make some apologies.

Because the world is finally righting itself and all the racist, sexist, classist, anti-semitic, etc. “jokes” and “banter” are about to be revealed for all the world to see.

Hope your employer is forgiving.

Hope your customers are forgiving.

Hope they are all the exact opposite of you.

Be scared, White People. It’s (past) time.
