Duty Called!

Sorry about yesterday… I really meant to write, honest!

J kept me up all night and at 6 am I took him into Husband and begged for mercy. Husband took him so I could score a full hour of sleep (WOO!) before I had to head out to my first full workers’ compensation hearing. You know, one that doesn’t get settled immediately prior or that the judge doesn’t decide we’re just not ready to try.

I had to go by the office and pick up something I forgot the night before and then I headed out. It was only about a 30 minute drive to the hearing so I gave myself 45 in the hopes of making a Starbucks run… you know, for MORE caffeine. Um… what happened to there being a Starbucks on every corner and three more within walking distance?? I took three different exits just praying for that gorgeous green emblem… no. freaking. luck. There wasn’t a Starbucks for miles. (Side note? If I still had my stupid suicidal Droid I TOTALLY could have found a Starbucks.)

I finally gave up in fear of being late and just went on to the courthouse. I did stop for soda and was so jacked up on caffeine by the time our case was called at 11:30 that it’s a wonder no one asked me if I was high. (I was. But just on Diet Coke. Promise.) I had a stack of exhibits at least a foot high. They were held together with rubber bands… three sets of lovely exhibits. One for me, one for the judge, one for opposing counsel.

Opposing counsel arrived and asked to exchange exhibits. She pulled out a stack of like six sheets of paper. Awesome. I’m the over-prepared jack-hole. I tell her to hold on and I’ll get my stack… and then proceed to drop them. Everywhere. Out of the rubber band that HELD THEM IN ORDER.

Oh God there were papers everywhere. I sort of just stood there for a second staring at the mess and hoping someone would jump out with an “Easy Button” and turn me into a Staples commercial. No such luck. I had to get down on my hands and knees, in my skirt suit, and scrounge for papers. Did I mention I was in the courtroom? Smack in front of the door? And the judge was already seated on the bench?

Yeah. I’m classy like that. My client actually helped me get the papers in order. Not quite the picture of confidence I wanted to portray. But all things considered? It went well. I won’t have a decision for a few weeks but in the words of Melaina Buller? “I think I’m gonna win!” Granted, I won’t score a date with Jimmy Valentine, but marking a “W” in my column sure would feel nice.

So yes. I missed a day. I’m sorry. Honest I am. But I was busy kicking ass and taking names in the courtroom so I feel certain you will forgive me.

In other news, J is obviously still not sleeping, AJ has not come to terms with the new little brother concept, and I’m still not happy with the job my housekeepers are doing. But other than that? Yesterday wasn’t terrible so I can’t complain. I also received my first (of many) items that I’m collecting to do a HUMONGOUS giveaway for J’s first birthday in August. I have to start early because otherwise I’d be all “Hey, who wants to win… this used baby outfit and no, GAH! That’s not poop… it’s a design.” Seriously? It’s gonna be big. I’m so excited I can’t stand it and wish I could do the whole thing now.

And that’s all I’ve got for now. Maybe one day soon I’ll have something interesting to say! 🙂

We missed you – but we also totally understand that you need some time away from us sometimes.

Congrats on the first full hearing! I'm sure you'll win.

One idea on the sleep front – have you thought about putting husband in charge at night? Unless J is in a growth spurt, he probably doesn't need to eat at night, he just likes to because you're there and you're the milk source. But dad has no food source. I had a friend who had to do that to get her daughter to sleep through the night. If she was the one dealing with it, all her daughter wanted to do was nurse.

Why is it that when you really want/need (because when it comes to starbucks it's the same thing) a starbucks, there aren't any around??? Drives me crazy!

Glad to hear that aside from the exhibits drama, all went well! That's wonderful!
