Motherhood by the Numbers

Motherhood is so many wonderful things.

It is giggles at bed time. It is snuggling up to someone you love more than life and reading a story. It is wrinkling up your nose at “stinky feet” shoved in your face. It is little plastic animals tucked in strange, strange places, and goldfish crackers falling out of diapers.

And as J grows, I have also discovered that motherhood is a lot about numbers. It’s counting the days until your baby arrives. Counting the hours until you can sleep. Counting the number of dirty diapers in the first few weeks.

Motherhood is measuring happiness in days, and then weeks, and then months as people ask you how old your son is. Motherhood is weighing in and shrugging off the pounds as they run rampant over your bathroom scale. It is measuring formula and pumping ounces. It is counting fingers and toes to be sure they are all there. Ten fingers. Ten Toes. Two eyes. Two ears. One nose. One perfect, little package of joy.

Motherhood is Five Little Ducks, Five Green and Speckled Frogs, Five Little Pumpkins, and Three Little Pigs.

Motherhood is counting steps until the inevitable tumble. It is marking inches on the wall and memorizing percentiles. It is the perfect dose of Tylenol and the droppers full of Mylicon. It is one long night after another, always waiting for the next cry or laugh or God forbid, scream.

Motherhood is day after day of knowing that 26 pounds and 11 ounces of amazing is walking around in size 3 (extra wide) shoes, and loving every minute of it. It is the fourth “no” accompanied by the scoop into the air that finally stops the trash can scavenging.  It is ten fingernail clippings piled up on the bathroom counter before being raked into the trashcan.

I have been a mother to the most wonderful boy in the whole world for 13 months. For 57 weeks. For 400 days. I have been a mother for more diapers than I could count, more boo-boos than I’d like to remember, and more giggles than I can wrap my heart around. I have been a mother for 9600 hours. For 576,000 minutes. For 34,560,000 seconds.

And the best part is? It’s still just the beginning.

*Please don’t judge me on the math, it could be way off. I’m really REALLY bad with numbers. There are 10 toes and 10 fingers, right?
