Making Changes

Posted on | June 19, 2011 | 9 Comments

A while ago, I asked for suggestions to change things up for J and I.  And boy did you guys deliver.

In the post, I said I’d pick my favorites and then we’d vote on what I’d do… but once I read all the suggestions, I decided it was better for me to read them and decide for myself what I wanted to do.  But since you guys went all out giving me things to try, I wanted to let you know what I’ve done.

I got myself a new ‘do. I haven’t dyed my hair since college, but I thought it was time for a new look.  So I booked an appointment and I went RED.  To be exact, I went “Rene Russo in Thomas Crown Affair Red” as suggested by the fabulous Elizabeth.  And I love it.

When we lived here before, with the ex, “our” bedroom was the back bedroom across the hall from J’s nursery.  I loved the suggestion of switching up the bedrooms so I went with it.  What used to be the guest room became my room… and I decorated it exactly how I wanted… and how my ex would have rolled his eyes at the choices!  It’s become my favorite room of the house by far because it is 100% me.

First, I painted.  The walls went from boring beige to a warm copper.

Second, I went out and took advantage of Kohl’s buy one get one sale on sheets and spent a small fortune on a VERY nice set of sheets. It felt like a steal because I got two sets for the price of one set so I pretended that I didn’t spend all that money on something to sleep on.  I also found a bedspread I liked that was so girly it practically screamed “JaneAustenReeseWitherspoonPinkToeNails.”

Third, I bought two (VERY CHEAP) pieces of furniture that I’ve always wanted… a standing mirror and a vanity.  I know, they’re so girly.  But I wanted a vanity since I was a little girl… and it was time to have one.  The only other thing I remember wanting when I was a little girl was a canopy bed and since I no longer want one of those, the vanity held the key.

To finish off the room, I hit up Goodwill  for old gold picture frames which I gutted and hung on the walls with some favorite quotes.  Then as the last touch, a silly shag carpet, white, from Target.

I love my bedroom.

I painted 3/4 of the kitchen. I intend to finish when I can, but it’s a big room!!  I decided I needed something bright and cheerful right when I walk in the door at the end of the day.  So rather than keep the boring beige walls that the previous owner had, I painted the walls “Apple Orchard” green.  It’s so bright and cheerful that every time I look at the walls I get all warm and fuzzy and want to dance to bubblegum pop music.

The last suggestion I’ve incorporated so far has been one of my favorites.  I went out and bought myself a PO Box at the post office.  The address is there on the right side of the page and I invited you guys to send me “Happy Mail.” Oh boy did you.  I have gotten artwork that calls me a rockstar.  I’ve gotten sweet letters.  I’ve gotten an awesome card that came with instructions to pass it along when I no longer needed it.  I’ve gotten warm, positive energy from a cold post office box.  It’s been amazing so far, so thank you for the idea and for taking your time to brighten my day.  If you’re interested, the address is:  Law Momma PO Box 18167, Macon, GA 31209.

Overall, we’re doing okay these days.  It’s tough and challenging, but what part of parenthood isn’t? There are so many more ideas I want to incorporate into my life here and I can’t thank you all enough for being so thoughtful and considerate as to help me get through this time in my life.

You guys are absolutely the best.

Thanks!! -LM

I’m woefully behind on your posts but I try to catch up as often as I can in between the mess that is our life. I did want to tell you how proud of you I am – how much you have grown as a mother and person these past few months. How glad I am to see you take what could have been the time that pulled you down and made it your beotch instead. 🙂 And quite nicely I might add.

And that you decided to go to BlogHer where I will run screaming into your arms that are pushing me away in terror… :p

I love the apple orchard green!! That is just the color I was shooting for when I painted my bedroom but I missed big time and ended up with bright lime. Ah well. Glad you were successful with your paint choice! And I love that you’re making all these positive changes, you are kicking ass. Much love to you.
