Monday Morning Antics

I wrote a very sweet post last night, intended to be posted this morning for warm, fuzzy, Monday feelings.

And then this morning came and I had no such warm, fuzzy feelings.  And also this morning happened and it was too much not to share with you.

First, around 4:00, my son began talking in his sleep.  Though talking is probably not the right word… it was more like yelling.  Apparently he channelled his inner Jackie Gleason and was bellowing out “MOMMA! GO COOK! YOU GO COOK!” at the top of his lungs.  It was both frightening and hilarious at the same time, especially considering the times that Momma actually “cooks” are few and far between.  Perhaps he was trying to tell me something…

Then, when we finally crawled out of bed just after 7, the heater was broken and the house was an ice box.  Oh well. That’s what home warranties are for, right?  I got J dressed and got myself dressed and went to feed the dog.

I keep the dog food in a giant Tupperware container with a flip top lid.  It fits neatly inside one of the cabinets so it’s always out of sight.  I pulled it out and took one cup over to AJ’s food bowl.  When I went back for the second cup, the container, in slow motion, slid out of the cabinet and onto the floor.  The lid was open.

Food went everywhere.

And I mean everywhere.

It was scattered across the kitchen floor like I was trying to carpet the place in puppy chow.

I let out a VERY exasperated sigh, which brought J running, and sat down on the floor to start picking it all back up.

About two handfuls into cleaning it up, AJ started panting.  Before I could get my old ass up off the floor and get him outside, he threw up everywhere… presumably from the sight of so much food all at once.

J has a tendency to get entirely too close to those types of messes so I abandoned cleaning up the food in favor of cleaning up the vomit.  As I cleaned the floor and told AJ it was okay, I heard a crunching sound from the other side of the room.

“I drump! I drump! Look Momma!”  And I looked. And yes, J was jumping.  And crunching the dog food under his feet.

At that point, I had two choices… rip out my hair and go back to bed, or laugh hysterically and finish cleaning up.

I chose laughter… and arriving late to work smelling like dog food.

That’s really the thing though, right? It’s all about realizing that every little life drama is just a chance to choose laughter.  It’s one of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn in my life, but the end result, I hope, is that I’m a little lighter of mood and perhaps a little lighter of spirit.  Joy is, for all intents and purposes, sometimes the hardest choice to make… but it is a choice, and I’m making it every day… one crunched pile of dog food at a time.

Sometimes I have those days where I feel like I’m in the middle of a sitcom, and any second a curtain is going to open with a room of 40 people whooping and clapping at my misfortune. Laughing is the best thing to do!

Oh, Monday morning! Not quite as messy, Laura hid my car keys last night. Which made for a fairly frantic morning, trying to get my mother off to the airport on time!

And I was frustrated about not being able to find Bud a coat to wear this morning.

Well, showing up smelling like the dog FOOD beats showing up smelling like the dog VOMIT, and it really could have gone either way so I’m calling that a win! And really you gotta take ’em where you can get ’em. Kind of like Tim Tebow. Wow, you could be like the Tim Tebow of Monday mornings; the mechanics need some work but you’re surprisingly effective in the clutch 🙂

Bless your heart. What a way to start the day! And I have to mention this too – every time I hear or read “all intents and purposes,” I have to laugh. My husband and I are huge “The King of Queens” fans. (You know, Doug and Carrie?) Anyway, I love the episode where Carrie has to correct him when he says “intensive purposes.” Cracks me up every time. I just went off on a major tangent, but all this to say – I hope tomorrow is much better! 🙂
