A Fish: Happily Without a Bicycle

Posted on | May 18, 2012 | 22 Comments

This morning, I was talking to my Ex’s mother about some visitation decisions since she’s sick and can not see J this weekend as planned.  While we were talking, she mentioned a few things about the woman my Ex is currently seeing and then said “I just wish you could meet someone,” with a sigh.  In the past, that would have wounded me.  In the past I would have thought she meant that somehow my Ex was more desireable, more dateable… more acceptable to the opposite sex.  In the past, I would have thought she was saying I was failing as a woman, as a single woman, as a mother.

But today, all at once, it hit me:

I don’t want to meet anyone.

Y’all. I am 100% perfectly happy with my life.  As her words bounced around my heart and soul and felt resistance where there used to be crevices, I realized that I am whole and healed.  I no longer care about who my Ex sees or one-upping him in the realm of dating.  I no longer care if people think I’m a lonely old woman caring for two dogs and a child.

I’m not a lonely old woman.

I am a happy young mother.  I am sublimely, earth-shatteringly happy with my house, my child, my job, and my life.  For what feels like the first time in my life, I don’t NEED a man.  I don’t need someone to distract me from my reality because my reality?  It is overwhelmingly awesome.

I’ve lost over twenty pounds.

I’ve bought new clothes and changed my hair.

I’ve thrown open my arms and embraced me in a way that I never have before in my life.

And you know what?

I’m drop dead gorgeously amazing in every way.

I don’t need a man to tell me that, to remind me of that, to make me realize briefly that I’m worth while.  I have myself for that.  I have my son for that.

I am complete.

I am completely happy.

I’m single.  I’m not dating.  I’m a notorious flirt… ask any of my opposing counsels… but I’m not interested in taking any of those flirtations seriously.

This is my time to be me… to be the best lawyer, the best mom, and the best damn Law Momma I can be.

I am proud of who I am, what I look like, and where I’m going in my life.

And I don’t need a man to remind me of any of that.

You are my idol. I will think of you every time I feel myself slipping into the lonely old woman thoughts. I can’t wait to get to that place!
